Portugal is the westernmost European country on the Iberian Peninsular, bordering Spain on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. The archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores in the Atlantic are also Portuguese territories. Portugal has over 10 million citizens and a long cultural and linguistic history as exemplified by the over 250 million Portuguese speakers worldwide. Portugal’s capital Lisbon is also the largest city of the Republic. Portugal is a historic maritime power and even today the fishing industry is an important business sector alongside minerals, agribusiness and forestry which each make up another large swath of the economy.  Portugal is a highly developed economy, with an excellent healthcare system, the world’s leading cork producer and increasingly also a very popular tourist destination, especially amongst avid golfers and foodies.


Under the Golden Visa Provisions, non-EU citizens may apply for a Portuguese residence permit based on an investment qualifying under the following options:

  • capital transfer of at least €1million
  • Creation of at least 10 jobs
  • Purchase of real estate valued at minimum €500,000 or, a purchase and restoration of an older property or property in an urban redevelopment area at the value of at least €350,000
  • Investment into public or private research institutions in the national scientific or technology system of at least €350,000
  • Investment of at least €250,000 into arts, for reconstruction or refurbishment of national heritage sites
  • Investment of at least €350,000 into investment or venture capital funds dedicated to Portuguese commercial companies
  • Capital investment of at least €350,000 to establish a new commercial venture, with commercial operations in Portugal and creation of at least five jobs for a minimum period of three years
